What Is Forgiveness in the Bible — Meaning Explained

Forgiveness is one of the most beautiful and necessary concepts in Scripture, operating in two directions: vertically between God and humanity, and horizontally between people. Divine forgiveness is God's act of removing the debt of sin, canceling its punishment, and restoring the sinner to fellowship. This is possible only because Jesus Christ paid the full penalty for sin on the cross. Ephesians 1:7 declares, 'In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins, according to the riches of his grace.' When God forgives, He removes our transgressions as far as the east is from the west, remembers them no more, and casts them behind His back. Human forgiveness is the act of releasing someone from the debt they owe us because of wrongs committed. Jesus taught extensively on forgiveness, making it a non-negotiable command for His followers. In the Lord's Prayer, He instructed us to pray, 'Forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors,' and then added the sobering warning: 'For if ye forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you: But if ye forgive not men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses.' This does not mean human forgiveness earns divine forgiveness, but that an unforgiving heart reveals an unregenerate heart. Forgiveness is not the same as forgetting, excusing sin, or avoiding consequences — it is a decision to release the offender to God and refuse to harbor bitterness.
