The Biblical Context

Fellowship is one of the richest concepts in the New Testament, encompassing far more than casual socializing or church attendance. The Greek word koinonia means partnership, sharing, participation, communion, and contribution. It describes a mutual life, a common bond, and a joint enterprise that unites people at the deepest level. The New Testament uses fellowship in several dimensions. First, believers have fellowship with God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. John wrote, 'That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that ye also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship is with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.' This vertical fellowship is the foundation of all horizontal fellowship. Because we share in the life of God, we share in one another's lives. Second, believers have fellowship with the Holy Spirit. Paul prayed for the Philippians that 'the communion of the Holy Ghost be with you all.' This is not merely the Spirit's presence in each individual but His binding power among all believers, creating the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace. Third, believers have fellowship with one another. The early church 'continued stedfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers.' Their fellowship was not optional but essential, expressed in shared worship, shared resources, and shared mission. The New Testament commands believers not to forsake assembling together but to encourage one another. Fourth, believers have fellowship in the gospel. Paul thanked God for the Philippians' 'fellowship in the gospel from the first day until now.' They were partners with him in advancing the kingdom — through prayer, financial support, and personal encouragement. This partnership had eternal significance. Fifth, believers have fellowship in suffering. Paul told the Philippians that it has been granted to them 'not only to believe on him, but also to suffer for his sake,' and they shared in his chains. Fellowship in Christ's sufferings is a profound mystery — participating in the fellowship of His death and resurrection. Fellowship is maintained through truth, love, and the Spirit. It is broken by sin, division, and worldliness. The Lord's Supper is called communion (koinonia) because it expresses and renews the fellowship of believers with Christ and with one another. True fellowship is not found in programs or buildings but in the shared life of those who are united to Christ by faith.
