The Biblical Context

Demonology is the doctrine of demons — the study of evil spirit beings who serve Satan and work against God and humanity. Demons are not independent deities but created beings who fell from their original state. Revelation 12:4, 7-9 describes a war in heaven in which Satan and his angels were cast out. These fallen angels became demons. Demons are personal beings with intelligence, will, and emotion. They can speak (Mark 1:24), possess knowledge (Acts 16:16-17), feel fear (James 2:19), and desire embodiment (Luke 8:30-32). They are not mere metaphors for evil but real spiritual entities. Demons operate under Satan's authority in an organized hierarchy. Ephesians 6:12 describes 'rulers of the darkness of this world' and 'spiritual wickedness in high places.' Satan is called 'the prince of the power of the air' and 'the god of this world.' The New Testament records numerous encounters between Jesus and demons. He cast out demons with a word, demonstrating His absolute authority over them. The demons recognized Him and feared His judgment. 'What have we to do with thee, Jesus, thou Son of God? art thou come hither to torment us before the time?' The destiny of demons is certain. Matthew 25:41 speaks of 'everlasting fire, prepared for the devil and his angels.' Their final judgment is described in Revelation 20:10, where they are cast into the lake of fire. For believers, demons have no ultimate power. Colossians 1:13 says God 'hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear Son.' The Christian's protection is in Christ's victory, not in rituals or formulas. Demonology reminds us that spiritual warfare is real but that Christ has already won the decisive victory.
