Anointing in Scripture carries rich significance across both Testaments. The Hebrew word mashach and the Greek chrio both mean to rub, smear, or pour oil upon something or someone. In the Old Testament, anointing with oil was the visible sign of God's choice and empowerment for specific offices. Prophets were anointed to speak God's word, priests to offer sacrifices and mediate between God and man, and kings to rule in God's name. The anointing oil was a sacred mixture that symbolized the Holy Spirit's empowerment — no one could serve in these offices without it. David was anointed by Samuel while still a shepherd boy, and 'the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward.' The term 'Messiah' (Hebrew Mashiach) and 'Christ' (Greek Christos) both mean 'the Anointed One,' referring to Jesus as the ultimate fulfillment of all three offices — Prophet, Priest, and King. Jesus' anointing was confirmed by the Spirit descending at His baptism and by His powerful ministry of teaching, healing, and deliverance. In the New Testament, the anointing shifts from external oil to the internal presence and power of the Holy Spirit. The Apostle John writes, 'But the anointing which ye have received of him abideth in you, and ye need not that any man teach you: but as the same anointing teacheth you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie.' Every believer in Christ has received this anointing — the indwelling Holy Spirit who teaches, guides, empowers, and confirms their relationship with God. The New Testament also speaks of specific gifts and callings as anointings — the pastor-teacher is gifted by the Spirit, and every member of the body has received grace according to Christ's measure. False concepts of anointing have emerged in some movements, treating it as a mystical force, a special elite status, or a transferable spiritual power. The biblical view is simpler and more glorious: the anointing is the Holy Spirit's presence and power in the life of every believer, enabling them to know God, understand His Word, and serve Him effectively. It is received at conversion, not earned through spiritual performance, and it grows as believers walk in obedience and faith.
