Anointing with oil is a biblical practice used for consecration, healing, and symbolizing the presence and power of the Holy Spirit. In the Old Testament, prophets, priests, and kings were anointed to signify their divine appointment to office. 1 Samuel 16:13 describes such an event: 'Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the Lord came upon David from that day forward.' This physical act represented the spiritual reality of God's favor and the empowerment necessary to fulfill a sacred calling. In the New Testament, anointing is frequently associated with prayer for the sick and the internal work of the Spirit. James 5:14 instructs the church, 'Is any sick among you? let him call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.' Here, the oil is a symbolic accompaniment to the prayer of faith, pointing to the healing grace of God. Furthermore, 1 John 2:20 speaks of a spiritual anointing: 'But ye have an unction from the Holy One, and ye know all things.'
