The Biblical Context
Work was part of God's design before the Fall — He placed Adam in the garden 'to dress it and to keep it' (Genesis 2:15). Sin made work toilsome but didn't make it inherently bad. Scripture consistently honors diligent labor and warns against laziness. Proverbs is full of exhortations to industriousness: 'The hand of the diligent maketh rich' (Proverbs 10:4). Paul was blunt: 'if any would not work, neither should he eat' (2 Thessalonians 3:10). The New Testament transforms work by giving it spiritual purpose. Paul writes, 'Whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men' (Colossians 3:23). This means every honest occupation — from farming to teaching to business — can be done as worship and service to God. Work provides for families, enables generosity, contributes to society, and develops character. The Bible also establishes boundaries: the Sabbath rest principle shows that work is not our identity or ultimate purpose — God is.
