What Happened at the Tower of Babel — Meaning Explained

Genesis 11:1-9 records this pivotal event. After the flood, humanity shared one language and settled in the plain of Shinar (Mesopotamia). Rather than obeying God's command to 'fill the earth' (Genesis 9:1), they said, 'Let us build us a city and a tower, whose top may reach unto heaven; and let us make us a name, lest we be scattered' (Genesis 11:4). Their sin was threefold: pride ('make us a name'), rebellion against God's command to spread out, and self-sufficiency (building their own way to heaven). God responded, 'Let us go down, and there confound their language' (Genesis 11:7). Unable to communicate, they ceased building and scattered — exactly what God had commanded.
