What Was the Tabernacle — Meaning Explained

God gave Moses detailed instructions for the tabernacle on Mount Sinai (Exodus 25-31), saying, 'Let them make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them' (Exodus 25:8). It consisted of an outer court with the brazen altar (sacrifice) and laver (cleansing), a Holy Place with the golden lampstand (light), table of showbread (sustenance), and altar of incense (prayer), and the Most Holy Place containing the ark of the covenant covered by the mercy seat. Only the high priest entered the Most Holy Place — once a year on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16). Every element pictures Christ: He is the door (John 10:9), the light of the world (John 8:12), the bread of life (John 6:35), our intercessor (Hebrews 7:25), and the mercy seat where God meets sinners through blood atonement. Hebrews explains that the earthly tabernacle was 'a shadow of heavenly things' (Hebrews 8:5). When Christ died, the temple veil was torn from top to bottom (Matthew 27:51), opening direct access to God.
