The Biblical Context
God's sovereignty means He rules over everything — nothing is outside His control. Psalm 103:19 declares, 'The LORD hath prepared his throne in the heavens; and his kingdom ruleth over all.' Daniel 4:35 states, 'he doeth according to his will in the army of heaven, and among the inhabitants of the earth: and none can stay his hand, or say unto him, What doest thou?' Isaiah 46:10 records God saying, 'My counsel shall stand, and I will do all my pleasure.' God's sovereignty extends over nature (Psalm 135:6-7), nations (Acts 17:26), individual lives (Proverbs 16:9), and even seemingly random events (Proverbs 16:33). This does not eliminate human responsibility — the Bible holds both truths simultaneously. Joseph told his brothers, 'ye thought evil against me; but God meant it unto good' (Genesis 50:20). God's sovereignty is not tyranny but wise, loving governance. Romans 8:28 assures that He works 'all things together for good to them that love God.' Sovereignty is the believer's comfort — nothing is wasted, and no circumstance is beyond redemption.
