The primary rapture passage is 1 Thessalonians 4:16-17: 'For the Lord himself shall descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trump of God: and the dead in Christ shall rise first: Then we which are alive and remain shall be caught up together with them in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air: and so shall we ever be with the Lord.' The word 'rapture' comes from the Latin 'rapturo,' translating the Greek 'harpazo' (caught up). Paul also describes the transformation: 'We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump' (1 Corinthians 15:51-52). Pre-tribulationists believe the rapture occurs before the seven-year tribulation, citing 1 Thessalonians 5:9: 'God hath not appointed us to wrath.' Mid- and post-tribulationists place it later, arguing the church endures some or all tribulation. Regardless of timing, the practical application is readiness: 'Therefore be ye also ready: for in such an hour as ye think not the Son of man cometh' (Matthew 24:44).
