What "What Is the New Earth?" Actually Means
Revelation 21:1 declares, 'I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away.' This is not an escape from creation but its renewal and perfection. Peter explains, 'We, according to his promise, look for new heavens and a new earth, wherein dwelleth righteousness' (2 Peter 3:13). Isaiah prophesied, 'Behold, I create new heavens and a new earth: and the former shall not be remembered' (Isaiah 65:17). Romans 8:21 promises creation's liberation 'from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.' The new earth will feature the New Jerusalem descending from heaven (Revelation 21:2), the river of life and tree of life (Revelation 22:1-2), and most importantly God's unmediated presence: 'Behold, the tabernacle of God is with men, and he will dwell with them' (Revelation 21:3). 'There shall be no more curse' (Revelation 22:3). The new earth is the ultimate fulfillment of Eden restored — paradise regained, eternal and glorious.
