What "Why Is Jesus Called the Good Shepherd?" Actually Means
John 10 contains Jesus' extended 'Good Shepherd' discourse. 'I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep' (John 10:11). Unlike a hired hand who abandons the flock when wolves come, Jesus willingly dies for His sheep. He knows them intimately: 'I know my sheep, and am known of mine' (John 10:14). He provides security: 'I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand' (John 10:28). This imagery draws from Psalm 23: 'The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.' Ezekiel 34 prophesied God Himself would shepherd His people after Israel's leaders failed: 'I will seek that which was lost, and bring again that which was driven away' (Ezekiel 34:16). Jesus fulfills this prophecy. He is also called 'that great shepherd of the sheep' (Hebrews 13:20) and 'the chief Shepherd' (1 Peter 5:4). The shepherd metaphor reveals Jesus' tender, personal, sacrificial care for every individual believer.
