What Is the Golden Rule — Meaning Explained

Jesus stated, 'Therefore all things whatsoever ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them: for this is the law and the prophets' (Matthew 7:12). This positive formulation goes beyond the negative version found in other religions ('do not do to others what you would not want done to you'). Jesus calls for proactive goodness, not merely the avoidance of harm. The Golden Rule is rooted in the second great commandment: 'Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself' (Matthew 22:39).
