What "What Is the Gift of Prophecy?" Actually Means
Paul ranks prophecy highly among spiritual gifts: 'Desire spiritual gifts, but rather that ye may prophesy' (1 Corinthians 14:1). He defines its purpose: 'He that prophesieth speaketh unto men to edification, and exhortation, and comfort' (1 Corinthians 14:3). Old Testament prophets like Isaiah, Jeremiah, and Ezekiel spoke God's words with divine authority — 'Thus saith the LORD.' New Testament prophecy functions within the church for building up believers. Agabus prophesied a famine (Acts 11:28) and Paul's arrest (Acts 21:10-11). Philip's four daughters prophesied (Acts 21:9). Paul instructs that prophetic utterances must be tested: 'Let the prophets speak two or three, and let the other judge' (1 Corinthians 14:29). First Thessalonians 5:20-21 says, 'Despise not prophesyings. Prove all things; hold fast that which is good.' All prophecy must align with Scripture — any message contradicting the Bible is false (Deuteronomy 13:1-3). Whether prophecy continues today is debated, but its purpose — edification, not spectacle — is clear.
