The Biblical Context

The evidence is cumulative and compelling. Jesus used divine titles: 'Before Abraham was, I am' (John 8:58), echoing God's name from Exodus 3:14. He claimed equality with God (John 5:18, 10:30). He accepted worship — something forbidden for mere men or angels (Matthew 14:33, John 20:28, Revelation 22:8-9). He forgave sins, which only God can do (Mark 2:5-7). He demonstrated divine attributes: omniscience (John 2:25, 6:64), omnipresence ('Where two or three are gathered together in my name, there am I,' Matthew 18:20), and omnipotence (calming storms, raising the dead, multiplying food). Scripture explicitly identifies Him as God: 'The Word was God' (John 1:1). 'In him dwelleth all the fulness of the Godhead bodily' (Colossians 2:9). 'God was manifest in the flesh' (1 Timothy 3:16). 'The great God and our Saviour Jesus Christ' (Titus 2:13). Hebrews 1:8 records the Father addressing the Son: 'Thy throne, O God, is for ever and ever.' The resurrection is the ultimate vindication of His divine claims (Romans 1:4).
