The Biblical Context

Genesis 1:1 opens Scripture with majestic simplicity: 'In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.' God spoke creation into existence — 'And God said, Let there be light: and there was light' (Genesis 1:3). Day 1: light separated from darkness. Day 2: sky separated from waters. Day 3: dry land and vegetation. Day 4: sun, moon, and stars. Day 5: sea creatures and birds. Day 6: land animals and humanity. Day 7: God rested (Genesis 2:2). Humanity was the crown of creation: 'God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness' (Genesis 1:26). Psalm 33:6 affirms, 'By the word of the LORD were the heavens made; and all the host of them by the breath of his mouth.' Hebrews 11:3 adds, 'Through faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that things which are seen were not made of things which do appear.' Christians hold various views on the length of creation days — literal 24-hour days, longer periods, or literary framework — but all agree God is the purposeful Creator. Colossians 1:16 reveals Christ's role: 'By him were all things created.'
