What Was God's Covenant with Abraham — Meaning Explained

The Abrahamic covenant is foundational to all of Scripture. God called Abram from Ur and promised: 'I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name great; and thou shalt be a blessing... in thee shall all families of the earth be blessed' (Genesis 12:1-3). God formalized the covenant in Genesis 15, passing between divided animals as a smoking furnace and burning lamp — symbolizing that He alone guaranteed the covenant (15:17). He promised Abraham's descendants the land from the river of Egypt to the Euphrates (15:18). Despite Abraham and Sarah's old age, God gave them Isaac — 'Is any thing too hard for the LORD?' (Genesis 18:14). God later tested Abraham by asking for Isaac back, then provided a ram substitute (Genesis 22:13). The covenant has three elements: land (fulfilled in Joshua, ultimately in the new earth), seed (fulfilled in Israel and supremely in Christ — Galatians 3:16), and blessing (fulfilled through the gospel reaching all nations). Paul argues that believers are Abraham's spiritual descendants: 'If ye be Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise' (Galatians 3:29).
