The Biblical Context
In 2 Samuel 7:12-16, God made an unconditional covenant with David: 'I will set up thy seed after thee... He shall build an house for my name, and I will stablish the throne of his kingdom for ever.' This promise had both near and far fulfillment. Solomon, David's son, built the temple and ruled Israel. But the eternal dimension points to Christ. The angel Gabriel told Mary, 'The Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David: And he shall reign over the house of Jacob for ever; and of his kingdom there shall be no end' (Luke 1:32-33).
