What "What Does the Bible Say About the Church?" Actually Means
The Greek word 'ekklesia' (church) means 'called-out assembly.' In the New Testament, it refers to both the universal body of all believers and local congregations. Jesus promised, 'I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it' (Matthew 16:18). The church was born at Pentecost when the Holy Spirit came upon the believers in Jerusalem. Paul describes the church as the body of Christ, with each member having a unique function (1 Corinthians 12). He also calls it the bride of Christ, beloved and being prepared for union with her Bridegroom (Ephesians 5:25-27). The early church devoted itself to the apostles' teaching, fellowship, breaking of bread, and prayer (Acts 2:42). The church's mission includes worship, discipleship, service, and evangelism. While no denomination perfectly embodies the biblical ideal, Scripture is clear that believers are not meant to live in isolation — they need the encouragement, accountability, and mutual ministry that church fellowship provides.
