The Biblical Context
The Greek word ekklesia ('called out ones') describes both the universal body of all believers and local congregations. Jesus declared, 'Upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it' (Matthew 16:18). The early church devoted itself to 'the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, and in breaking of bread, and in prayers' (Acts 2:42). These four elements — teaching, fellowship, communion, and prayer — define the church's core activities. Paul describes the church as Christ's body (1 Corinthians 12:27), a building 'fitly framed together' (Ephesians 2:21), and the bride of Christ (Ephesians 5:25-27). The church's mission is the Great Commission: making disciples of all nations (Matthew 28:19-20). Hebrews 10:25 warns against 'forsaking the assembling of ourselves together.' The church provides accountability, encouragement, spiritual gifts in action, and corporate worship. It is God's primary instrument in the world today.
