"In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins." — Ephesians 1:7 (KJV)
The Biblical Context
The centrality of blood runs throughout Scripture. Leviticus 17:11 establishes the principle: 'The life of the flesh is in the blood: and I have given it to you upon the altar to make an atonement for your souls.' Every Old Testament sacrifice pointed forward to Christ. Hebrews 9:22 declares, 'Without shedding of blood is no remission.' Christ's blood accomplishes what animal blood never could. It provides redemption: 'In whom we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of sins' (Ephesians 1:7). It justifies: 'Being now justified by his blood' (Romans 5:9). It cleanses: 'The blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin' (1 John 1:7). It purchases the church: God purchased with 'his own blood' (Acts 20:28). It establishes peace: 'Having made peace through the blood of his cross' (Colossians 1:20). It enables access to God: 'Having therefore, brethren, boldness to enter into the holiest by the blood of Jesus' (Hebrews 10:19). Revelation's saints overcome 'by the blood of the Lamb' (Revelation 12:11). Christ's blood is Christianity's power center.
