What "What Is a Blood Covenant in the Bible?" Actually Means
Covenants in the ancient world were sealed with blood to signify their gravity. God's covenant with Abraham was ratified when God alone passed between the divided animals as a smoking furnace and burning lamp (Genesis 15:17) — taking the entire obligation upon Himself. The Mosaic covenant was sealed when Moses sprinkled blood on the altar and the people (Exodus 24:6-8): 'Behold the blood of the covenant, which the LORD hath made with you.' Animal sacrifices throughout the Old Testament pointed to the ultimate blood covenant. Jesus declared at the Last Supper, 'This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many for the remission of sins' (Matthew 26:28). Hebrews 9:22 establishes the principle: 'Without shedding of blood is no remission.' The new covenant in Christ's blood is superior to all previous covenants — it provides permanent forgiveness, eternal redemption, and direct access to God. Every previous blood covenant was a shadow pointing to Calvary.
