"In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world." — John 16:33 (KJV)
The Biblical Context
The prosperity gospel teaches that God wants all believers to be physically healthy and financially wealthy, and that faith, positive confession, and giving will produce these results. This contradicts Scripture at multiple points. Jesus warned, 'In the world ye shall have tribulation' (John 16:33). Paul wrote, 'All that will live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution' (2 Timothy 3:12). He also endured 'a thorn in the flesh' that God refused to remove (2 Corinthians 12:7-9). The godliest people in Scripture experienced poverty and suffering — Paul (2 Corinthians 11:23-28), the prophets (Hebrews 11:36-38), and Jesus Himself, who 'had not where to lay his head' (Matthew 8:20). First Timothy 6:5 warns against those who suppose 'gain is godliness.' Jesus commanded, 'Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth' (Matthew 6:19). The true gospel offers something far better than health and wealth — forgiveness, eternal life, God's presence, and purpose that transcends circumstances.
