"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall." — Proverbs 16:18 (KJV)
The Biblical Context
Pride holds a unique place in the Bible's catalogue of sins — many scholars consider it the foundational sin behind all others. Lucifer's fall was driven by pride: 'I will be like the most High' (Isaiah 14:14). Proverbs 16:18 warns, 'Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall.' God actively opposes the proud: 'God resisteth the proud, but giveth grace unto the humble' (James 4:6). Pride manifests as self-sufficiency, arrogance, refusal to acknowledge God, comparison with others, and unwillingness to receive correction. The Pharisees exemplified religious pride, trusting their own righteousness rather than God's mercy. In contrast, Scripture consistently exalts humility. Jesus humbled Himself to become a servant and die on a cross (Philippians 2:5-8). He taught that 'whosoever shall exalt himself shall be abased; and he that shall humble himself shall be exalted' (Matthew 23:12). True humility is not self-degradation but an accurate view of ourselves in light of God's greatness.
