The Biblical Context
Prayer in the Bible is not passive wishing — it is powerful engagement with the Almighty. James 5:16-17 declares, 'The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much. Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months.' Moses' prayers turned away God's judgment from Israel (Exodus 32:11-14). Hannah prayed and received Samuel (1 Samuel 1). Hezekiah prayed and was healed with 15 additional years (2 Kings 20:1-6). Daniel prayed and received angelic revelation (Daniel 9-10). The early church prayed and Peter was released from prison by an angel (Acts 12:5-10). Jesus Himself spent whole nights in prayer (Luke 6:12). He promised, 'whatsoever ye shall ask in my name, that will I do' (John 14:13). Prayer aligns our will with God's, releases divine resources, overcomes spiritual opposition, and deepens intimacy with the Father.
