What "Why Should We Give Thanks to God?" Actually Means
First Thessalonians 5:18 commands, 'In every thing give thanks: for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus concerning you.' Note — it says 'in' everything, not 'for' everything. We thank God in all circumstances because He is sovereign over all. Psalm 100:4 instructs, 'Enter into his gates with thanksgiving, and into his courts with praise: be thankful unto him, and bless his name.' James 1:17 reminds us, 'Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights.' Ingratitude is listed among serious sins (Romans 1:21, 2 Timothy 3:2). The ten lepers were all healed, but only one returned to give thanks — Jesus asked, 'Were there not ten cleansed? but where are the nine?' (Luke 17:17). Daniel gave thanks even when praying was outlawed (Daniel 6:10). Paul sang hymns in prison (Acts 16:25). Thanksgiving is not a response to circumstances but a recognition of God's unchanging goodness regardless of circumstances.
