What "What Does the Bible Say About Peace?" Actually Means
Scripture presents peace on two levels. First, peace with God: 'being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ' (Romans 5:1). The war between sinful humanity and a holy God ended at the cross. Second, the peace of God: the inner tranquility that guards believers' hearts regardless of circumstances (Philippians 4:7). Jesus promised, 'Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid' (John 14:27). Isaiah 26:3 declares, 'Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on thee: because he trusteth in thee.' The fruit of the Spirit includes peace (Galatians 5:22). Peace does not mean the absence of problems but the presence of God in the midst of them. Jesus Himself slept through a storm (Mark 4:38) and told His disciples, 'In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world' (John 16:33).
