What "What Does the Bible Say About Patience?" Actually Means
Patience (also translated as longsuffering or endurance) is a key Christian virtue and a fruit of the Spirit (Galatians 5:22). The Bible presents patience on two levels: patience with people and patience with circumstances. God Himself is described as 'longsuffering' — slow to anger and patient with sinners, giving them time to repent (2 Peter 3:9). Believers are called to reflect this character. James teaches that trials produce patience: 'the trying of your faith worketh patience. But let patience have her perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, wanting nothing' (James 1:3-4). The heroes of faith demonstrated extraordinary patience — Abraham waited 25 years for the promised son, Joseph endured years of slavery and prison, and David waited over a decade between his anointing and his throne. Hebrews 12:1 urges believers to 'run with patience the race that is set before us,' keeping our eyes on Jesus, the ultimate example of patient endurance.
