What "What Does the Bible Say About Music in Worship?" Actually Means
The longest book in the Bible — Psalms — is a collection of songs. David, 'the sweet psalmist of Israel' (2 Samuel 23:1), composed many and organized temple worship with musicians: 'David and the captains of the host separated to the service of the sons of Asaph, and of Heman, and of Jeduthun, who should prophesy with harps, with psalteries, and with cymbals' (1 Chronicles 25:1). Psalm 150 commands praise with every instrument: trumpet, psaltery, harp, timbrel, stringed instruments, organs, and cymbals. Paul commanded, 'Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord' (Ephesians 5:19). Colossians 3:16 adds, 'Teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord.' Music isn't just emotional — it teaches theology. Moses sang after the Red Sea crossing (Exodus 15). Paul and Silas sang hymns in prison at midnight (Acts 16:25). Heaven resounds with worship: 'They sung a new song, saying, Thou art worthy' (Revelation 5:9). Style is secondary; what matters is that worship comes from the heart and glorifies God.
