The Biblical Context
Loneliness is a deeply human experience addressed throughout Scripture. Even great leaders experienced it — Moses felt alone in his leadership burden, Elijah fled to the wilderness believing he was the only faithful person left, David cried out in the Psalms, 'I watch, and am as a sparrow alone upon the house top' (Psalm 102:7), and Jesus experienced ultimate loneliness on the cross when He cried, 'My God, my God, why hast thou forsaken me?' (Matthew 27:46). God's response to loneliness begins with His presence: 'I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee' (Hebrews 13:5). He declared from creation, 'It is not good that the man should be alone' (Genesis 2:18), and designed humans for community. The church exists partly to address loneliness — believers are called to bear one another's burdens, encourage each other, and practice hospitality. Psalm 68:6 says God 'setteth the solitary in families.' While loneliness is painful, it can also draw us closer to God and create compassion for others who suffer.
