What "Do Children Go to Heaven?" Actually Means
This is a deeply personal question that Scripture addresses indirectly rather than with a single clear statement. Several principles provide comfort. David, mourning his infant son's death, said, 'I shall go to him, but he shall not return to me' (2 Samuel 12:23), expressing confidence he would see his child again. Jesus said, 'of such is the kingdom of heaven' regarding little children (Matthew 19:14) and warned against despising 'these little ones' whose angels behold the Father's face (Matthew 18:10). Romans 1:20 suggests that judgment is based on the suppression of known truth, which infants cannot do. The concept of an 'age of accountability' — while not using that exact phrase — recognizes that young children lack the moral capacity for conscious rebellion against God. God's character is the ultimate ground of assurance: 'Shall not the Judge of all the earth do right?' (Genesis 18:25). A God of infinite love and perfect justice can be trusted with the souls of children.
