The Biblical Context
God's faithfulness is one of His most celebrated attributes. Lamentations 3:23 proclaims, 'Great is thy faithfulness.' Deuteronomy 7:9 declares, 'the LORD thy God, he is God, the faithful God, which keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.' Paul assured the Corinthians, 'God is faithful, by whom ye were called unto the fellowship of his Son' (1 Corinthians 1:9) and 'God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able' (1 Corinthians 10:13). His faithfulness is contrasted with human fickleness: 'if we believe not, yet he abideth faithful: he cannot deny himself' (2 Timothy 2:13). Throughout history, God kept His promises to Abraham, David, and Israel despite their failures. He promised a Messiah — and sent Jesus. He promised the Holy Spirit — and poured Him out at Pentecost. Every sunrise, every season, every answered prayer testifies to divine faithfulness. Psalm 89:8 summarizes: 'O LORD God of hosts, who is a strong LORD like unto thee? or to thy faithfulness round about thee?'
