The Biblical Context

Many Christians struggle to forgive themselves even after receiving God's forgiveness. Paul addressed this directly: 'There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus' (Romans 8:1). If God does not condemn, self-condemnation contradicts His verdict. John wrote, 'If our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knoweth all things' (1 John 3:20). Paul himself had to release his past — he persecuted and killed Christians — yet wrote, 'Forgetting those things which are behind, and reaching forth unto those things which are before, I press toward the mark' (Philippians 3:13-14). David committed adultery and murder yet experienced full restoration: 'As far as the east is from the west, so far hath he removed our transgressions from us' (Psalm 103:12). God promises, 'I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more' (Jeremiah 31:34). Peter denied Jesus three times yet was restored and commissioned to 'feed my sheep' (John 21:17). Refusing to accept God's forgiveness can become a subtle form of pride — insisting our standards are higher than God's. The proper response to forgiveness is gratitude, not guilt — 'to whom little is forgiven, the same loveth little' (Luke 7:47).
