What "What Does the Bible Say About Discipleship?" Actually Means
Jesus said, 'If any man will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me' (Luke 9:23). Discipleship requires counting the cost (Luke 14:28-33). Jesus spent three years intensively training twelve men, modeling a relational approach to spiritual growth. The Great Commission commands, 'Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them... Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you' (Matthew 28:19-20). Discipleship involves learning Scripture (2 Timothy 2:15), prayer (1 Thessalonians 5:17), fellowship (Hebrews 10:25), and obedience (John 14:15). Jesus defined true disciples: 'If ye continue in my word, then are ye my disciples indeed' (John 8:31). Paul modeled this multiplication: 'The things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also' (2 Timothy 2:2).
