What "What Is Biblical Discernment?" Actually Means
Hebrews 5:14 describes mature believers as those 'who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.' Discernment is not suspicion or cynicism — it is Spirit-guided wisdom. Solomon asked for 'an understanding heart to judge thy people, that I may discern between good and bad' (1 Kings 3:9). Paul prayed that believers' love would 'abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment; That ye may approve things that are excellent' (Philippians 1:9-10). Discernment tests spirits: 'Try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world' (1 John 4:1). It evaluates teaching against Scripture: the Bereans 'searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so' (Acts 17:11). It guides decisions: 'Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths' (Proverbs 3:5-6). Discernment grows through Scripture knowledge, prayer, experience, and walking in the Spirit.
