Covenants are the backbone of biblical theology. God made covenants with Noah (Genesis 9:9-17, the rainbow — never to flood the earth again), Abraham (Genesis 15, 17 — land, descendants, blessing), Moses/Israel (Exodus 19-24 — the law at Sinai), David (2 Samuel 7 — an eternal throne), and ultimately the New Covenant through Christ (Jeremiah 31:31-34, Luke 22:20). Each covenant builds on the previous ones. The Noahic covenant preserves creation. The Abrahamic covenant creates a chosen people. The Mosaic covenant governs their life. The Davidic covenant promises a king. The New Covenant fulfills them all through Christ, who provides what the law could not — internal transformation: 'I will put my law in their inward parts, and write it in their hearts' (Jeremiah 31:33). Covenants typically include promises, conditions (though some are unconditional), signs (rainbow, circumcision, baptism), and blood ratification. Understanding covenants is essential for understanding the entire biblical narrative.
