What "What Does the Bible Say About Predestination?" Actually Means
Predestination is clearly taught in Scripture (Romans 8:29-30, Ephesians 1:4-5, 11), but its precise meaning is debated. Calvinists emphasize God's sovereign, unconditional election—He chose who would be saved before creation. Arminians emphasize God's foreknowledge—He predestined those He foreknew would freely choose Him. Both sides agree on key truths: salvation is entirely by grace, God is sovereign, humans are responsible for their choices, and no one seeks God on their own initiative (Romans 3:11). Paul presents predestination not as a source of anxiety but of assurance: if God chose us, nothing can separate us from His love (Romans 8:33-39).
