"Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams." — 1 Samuel 15:22 (KJV)
The Biblical Context
Obedience is a foundational theme in Scripture. God told Israel, 'If ye will obey my voice indeed, and keep my covenant, then ye shall be a peculiar treasure unto me' (Exodus 19:5). Samuel declared that 'to obey is better than sacrifice' (1 Samuel 15:22). Jesus said, 'If ye love me, keep my commandments' (John 14:15), making obedience the evidence of genuine love for God. The book of Deuteronomy repeatedly connects obedience with blessing and disobedience with consequences. Yet biblical obedience is not legalistic rule-following—it flows from a heart transformed by grace, enabled by the Spirit, and motivated by love for God.
