What "What Does the Bible Say About Idolatry?" Actually Means
Idolatry is the first sin addressed in the Ten Commandments: 'Thou shalt have no other gods before me' (Exodus 20:3). In the Old Testament, Israel repeatedly fell into worshipping false gods like Baal and Asherah, bringing severe consequences. But idolatry is not limited to statues—Paul equates covetousness with idolatry (Colossians 3:5), and John warns believers to 'keep yourselves from idols' (1 John 5:21). Modern idolatry includes making ultimate things of money, career, relationships, pleasure, or self. Anything that takes God's rightful place as supreme in our hearts becomes an idol. The antidote is wholehearted devotion to God: 'Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart' (Matthew 22:37).
