What "What Does the Bible Say About Humility?" Actually Means
Humility is not thinking less of yourself but thinking of yourself less, as C.S. Lewis suggested. Jesus said the greatest in His kingdom would be the servant of all (Matthew 23:11). He demonstrated this by washing His disciples' feet (John 13:1-17). Moses was described as the meekest man on earth (Numbers 12:3). Paul urged believers to 'in lowliness of mind let each esteem other better than themselves' (Philippians 2:3). God promises to exalt the humble (1 Peter 5:6) and to dwell with those of a contrite and humble spirit (Isaiah 57:15). Humility opens the door to God's grace (James 4:6), makes us teachable, and enables genuine community. It is the foundation upon which all other virtues are built.
