Giving is a central theme throughout Scripture. In the Old Testament, Israel gave tithes (a tenth) and various offerings. Proverbs 3:9 commands honoring the LORD with firstfruits. In the New Testament, Jesus commended the widow's two mites over the large gifts of the wealthy because she gave sacrificially (Mark 12:41-44). Paul taught that giving should be purposeful, willing, and cheerful: 'God loveth a cheerful giver' (2 Corinthians 9:7).
