What "Can Women Be Pastors?" Actually Means
Paul wrote, 'I suffer not a woman to teach, nor to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence' (1 Timothy 2:12), and 'Let your women keep silence in the churches' (1 Corinthians 14:34). Complementarians see these as universal, timeless commands rooted in creation order: 'For Adam was first formed, then Eve' (1 Timothy 2:13). Egalitarians argue these instructions addressed specific situations — perhaps unruly women in Ephesus or Corinth — and note the broader biblical witness: Deborah judged and led Israel (Judges 4:4). Huldah the prophetess was consulted over male priests (2 Kings 22:14). Priscilla taught Apollos (Acts 18:26). Phoebe was called a 'servant' (diakonos — same word used for male deacons) of the church (Romans 16:1). Junia was 'of note among the apostles' (Romans 16:7). Joel prophesied, 'Your sons and your daughters shall prophesy' (Joel 2:28). Galatians 3:28 declares, 'There is neither male nor female: for ye are all one in Christ Jesus.' Both sides affirm women's equal dignity and giftedness. The disagreement is about the specific office of senior pastor/elder. This is a matter where humble, prayerful study and charitable disagreement are appropriate.
