Zebulun
Pronounced ZEB-yoo-lun
- Meaning
- "Dwelling; Honor; Exalted dwelling"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Zebulun means "dwelling" or "honor" in Hebrew. He was the tenth son of Jacob and the sixth son of Leah. When he was born, Leah declared: "God hath endued me with a good dowry; now will my husband dwell with me, because I have born him six sons." Jacob's blessing prophesied: "Zebulun shall dwell at the haven of the sea; and he shall be for an haven of ships; and his border shall be unto Zidon." The tribe of Zebulun settled in the fertile region between the Sea of Galilee and the Mediterranean, becoming prosperous through both agriculture and maritime trade. Like Naphtali, Zebulun's territory was part of Galilee — the region where Jesus grew up, called His first disciples, and performed many miracles. Isaiah's prophecy that "the land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali" would see a great light found its fulfillment in Jesus' Galilean ministry. The tribe of Zebulun was known for military valor. In Deborah's war song, Zebulun is praised: "Zebulun and Naphtali were a people that jeoparded their lives unto the death in the high places of the field."
Spiritual meaning
Zebulun — 'dwelling place' — became the very territory where God chose to dwell among humanity in Jesus. The tribe's land was ordinary Galilee, yet it became the stage for the greatest story ever told.
