Zadok
Pronounced ZAY-dok
- Meaning
- "Righteous; Just"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Zadok means "righteous" or "just" in Hebrew. He was the high priest who served faithfully under both David and Solomon — one of the few figures in David's court who never wavered in loyalty through multiple political crises. When Absalom rebelled, Zadok remained loyal to David. When Adonijah attempted to seize the throne, Zadok sided with Solomon. David commanded Zadok to anoint Solomon at the Gihon spring: "Zadok the priest took an horn of oil out of the tabernacle, and anointed Solomon." This anointing established both Solomon's reign and Zadok's priestly dynasty. Zadok's descendants — the Zadokite priests — became the primary priestly line serving in the temple. Ezekiel's vision of the future temple specifies that "the sons of Zadok" alone will serve at God's altar "because they kept my charge... when the children of Israel went astray." The name Zadok carries the meaning of its bearer — righteousness consistently lived out. In a court full of political maneuvering, Zadok remained steadfastly loyal to God's chosen leaders, proving that quiet faithfulness is the most powerful political position.
Spiritual meaning
Zadok — 'righteous' — served through two kings and two coups without compromising. His family earned the privilege of eternal temple service because they 'kept the charge' when others strayed.
