Noah means "rest" or "comfort" in Hebrew. His father Lamech named him with the hope that Noah would bring comfort from the toil and cursed ground that followed the Fall. Noah became the vessel through whom God preserved humanity and the animal kingdom during the great Flood. Noah is described as "a just man and perfect in his generations" who "walked with God" (Genesis 6:9). In an age of widespread wickedness, Noah's righteousness set him apart.
