Nehemiah
Pronounced nee-uh-MY-uh
- Meaning
- "The LORD comforts"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Nehemiah means "the LORD comforts" in Hebrew. He served as cupbearer to the Persian king Artaxerxes — a position of great trust and influence. When Nehemiah heard that Jerusalem's walls lay in ruins, he wept, fasted, and prayed before boldly requesting permission to rebuild them. Nehemiah's leadership in rebuilding Jerusalem's walls in just fifty-two days is one of the most impressive organizational achievements in Scripture. Despite opposition, ridicule, and conspiracy, he kept the workers focused and the project on schedule. Nehemiah combined prayer with practical action — he prayed and posted guards, trusted God and distributed weapons. His famous response to those who tried to distract him from the work encapsulates his determination: "I am doing a great work, so that I cannot come down."
Spiritual meaning
Nehemiah's name — 'the LORD comforts' — expressed itself through rebuilding. His life teaches that God's comfort is not passive but active — it empowers us to rebuild what is broken and restore what has been lost.
