Jeremiah
Pronounced jair-uh-MY-uh
- Meaning
- "The LORD exalts; Appointed by God"
- Origin
- Hebrew
Jeremiah means "the LORD exalts" or "appointed by God" in Hebrew. Known as the "weeping prophet," Jeremiah was called by God before he was born to deliver difficult messages of judgment to Judah in the decades leading up to the Babylonian exile. God's call to Jeremiah came with a powerful assurance: "Before I formed thee in the belly I knew thee; and before thou camest forth out of the womb I sanctified thee, and I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations" (Jeremiah 1:5). Despite Jeremiah's protest that he was too young, God promised to be with him. Jeremiah endured rejection, imprisonment, and emotional anguish for faithfully delivering God's message. Yet amid his warnings of judgment, he also delivered some of the most beautiful promises in Scripture — including the new covenant prophecy (Jeremiah 31:31-34) and the beloved assurance of Jeremiah 29:11.
Spiritual meaning
Jeremiah's name — 'the LORD exalts' — is a promise that faithfulness to God's call brings eternal honor, even when earthly circumstances bring suffering. His life teaches that obedience matters more than comfort.
