Both are used by Christian families, and the comparison labels each one honestly. A scriptural name is carried by a real person or place in the King James text — Hannah, Caleb, Silas. A thematic name never appears in Scripture but was chosen for a meaning Scripture speaks to, such as Faith or Trinity. Neither is more valid; the difference is simply whether the word is in the text.

United States Social Security birth records covering 1880 to 2008, grouped by decade. The figure shown is the share of recorded births given that name in its peak decade, so it tells you when a name was most used rather than how many people carry it today.
