Verity Meaning — Origin & Biblical Significance

Verity comes from the Latin veritas, 'truth,' through Old French verité. It entered English naming in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries as part of the Puritan virtue-name wave that also produced Patience, Constance, Prudence, Mercy, Temperance and Hope. Those names were theological statements, not decorations: parents were naming the thing they wanted the child's life to demonstrate.

Verity is not a name in Scripture, but the word is. The KJV uses it twice, and both instances are weighty. Paul writes, 'I speak the truth in Christ, and lie not... a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and verity' (1 Timothy 2:7). And Psalm 111:7 says, 'The works of his hands are verity and judgment; all his commandments are sure.' In both cases 'verity' translates a word about reliability rather than mere factual accuracy — truth you can lean your weight on.

That distinction matters for a name. Biblical truth language, both the Hebrew emeth and the Greek alētheia, is closer to 'firmness, faithfulness, trustworthiness' than to the modern sense of 'correct information.' Naming a daughter Verity in the biblical register is a wish for dependability, not for being right.

Verity remains far more common in Britain than America, where it is still genuinely unusual. It has the practical advantage of an obvious meaning, a clean three-syllable rhythm, and no established nickname — though Vera and Vee are both available.
