Delilah Meaning in the Bible

Delilah is the Hebrew Delilah (דְּלִילָה), most plausibly from dalal, 'to weaken, to bring low,' though some connect it to layla, 'night,' giving 'of the night,' or to a Semitic root for 'delicate' or 'flirtatious.' The 'weaken' reading fits her role in the narrative with uncomfortable precision.

Judges 16 is not a story of romance gone wrong. The Philistine lords approach her with a specific commercial offer — eleven hundred pieces of silver from each of them — to discover the source of Samson's strength. She asks him directly, three times he lies, and three times she tests the answer by delivering him to men waiting in the room. The text says she pressed him daily 'so that his soul was vexed unto death' (Judges 16:16). She was not deceived about what she was doing.

Many name pages skip this. It is better to say plainly that Delilah is not a role model in Scripture, and that a family choosing the name is choosing sound and modern usage rather than biblical example. That is a legitimate choice — plenty of widely used names, including Cameron ('crooked nose') and Claudius ('lame'), carry unflattering baggage nobody thinks about.

It is also worth noting what the chapter is actually about, which is not Delilah. Samson's downfall is presented as self-inflicted: the man of extraordinary strength repeatedly tells someone he knows is trying to destroy him a little more of the truth. The verse that lands hardest is Judges 16:20 — 'he wist not that the LORD was departed from him.' If the name is used, that is the sermon in it: a warning about slow compromise, not about a woman. Delilah entered the US top 100 in 2020, driven largely by its sound.
